Our methodology

With over ten years of industry experience, we've designed a methodology that collects over 200 data points on every case using an extensive search of content in the public domain, including media and inquest reports, judgments, public inquiries, Hansard, blogs, social media, and Company House records. Our methodology is underpinned by our Ethics Statement.

Database design

Our database architecture was designed by combining best practices from similar databases and enhancing  this with additional fields and optionality to create a robust design that will facilitate the collection of an unprecedented quantity of qualitative data to inform our insights

Data Sources

We draw on over 20 different data sources but all have one thing in common - they are in the public domain. We believe this is the most reliable and evidence-based way of constructing representative accounts of what happened to inform our findings.

Utstein 2015 Comparator

The 2015 Utstein framework was the drowning prevention communities latest attempt to codify criteria to underpin the architecture of databases like the Water Incident Research Hub. We've provided coverage of over 80% of the Utstein criteria and added 60% extra data points

WAID and WIRH Comparator

To ensure our data is representative and comparable to the UK's national database, the WIRH is regularly calibrated to ensure it remains in proportion across several key aspects. Browse our interactive dashboard to find out more.
