Note: Due to work commitments, I am not taking any more expert witness instructions at this time

I specialize in sports, leisure, and facility safety. This includes swimming pool safety, water parks, outdoor watersports, drowning detection systems, accident investigation, in-water play equipment, lifeguarding, and training requirements.

I am a commercial leisure advisor to the RLSS UK and a past director of the International Life Saving Federation of Europe. I am a Member of the ISO SW/136/8 technical committee, which produce a range of leisure and water safety standards, including EN 15288, EN 1069, and ISO 20380. I have previously worked as a Head of Health and Safety and National Lifeguarding Manager in the UK. I recently authored the revised RLSS UK National Pool Management Qualification.

Work history

2021-2023 | Director | International Life Saving Federation of Europe.

  • I attended board meetings, supported drowning prevention campaigns and provided guidance to project leaders regarding pool and beach safety. 

2020-date | Editor | Water Incident Research Hub.

  • I publish and review blogs, articles, case reports and papers in leisure safety and litigation. A key project of the Hub is archiving over 200 data points per water incident between 1995-date to provide unprecedented insight into drowning aetiology and to inform drowning prevention interventions. The Hub also conducts micro-studies and publishes data, responding to key questions relevant to the sector. Research from the Hub has been quoted in whitepapers by the RLSS UK and CIMSPA.

  • I research and help produce standards on swimming pool safety, waterslide safety, wave machine safety, watersport safety (e.g. surfing, jet skis, paddleboarding etc.), floating play equipment, inflatable play equipment, open water safety, beach safety and automated drowning detection systems. 

2018-2023 | Head of Product Strategy | BSI.

  • As Head of Product Strategy for the UK Training Academy, I led the design and implementation of our 2022-25 strategic plan.
  • I held the UK Portfolio Strategy Manager role from June 2021 to February 2022, where I supported redesigning our 2022-25 strategic plan for our product portfolio. I held the role of Commercial Manager from Jan 2020 to May 2021, where I supported the growth of partnerships with the Academy, onboarding several clients.
  • I held the role of Management Systems Tutor between 2018-2019, where I delivered training as a specialist tutor on the implementation and audit of management systems within the following subject areas: health and safety, facilities management, quality, environment, anti-bribery, financial compliance, risk, governance to organizations such as EBRD, Mace, Cleveland Bridge, NHS, Scottish Water, Adidas, Accenture, Sheffield Foragemasters, Deloitte, Siemens.

2017-2023 | Guest Lecturer | Cardiff Metropolitan University.

  • I provided guest lectures to undergraduate and postgraduate students on Sports and Health Science courses, primarily on sociology and psychology modules. I regularly presented at University conferences including those held as part of the Wales Social Science Research Network. 

2017-date | Advisor | Royal Life Saving Society, UK.

  • I support the RLSS UK on all safety matters relating to the commercial leisure sector, meeting regularly to support the charity. My work is voluntary, and I support the revision to pool safety and lifeguard qualifications, technical advice on questions from members, review of guidance notes and publications, and the review of conference presentations.
  • I was the lead author on the writing of the RLSS UK National Pool Management Qualification, the leading safety qualification for pool managers. I developed and adapted the materials for use in other jurisdictions, including Ireland, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

2015-date | Owner/Director | SLS.

  • I wrote and delivered regulated safety and educational qualifications to the leisure sector. Between 2017-2019, I ran one of the UK’s largest training organisations for pool lifeguard trainer assessors (by courses run), qualifying over 110 pool lifeguard trainer assessors.
  • I developed and led a range of remote learning courses in the education, quality assurance and vocational assessor market between 2017-2021. 
  • I have sat as a board committee member at IOSH (Policy and Standards), CIMSPA (Audit and Probity), National Autistic Society Peterborough Branch (Treasurer), and Boston Judo Club (Coaching).

2016-2017 | Head of Health and Safety | 1Life Management Solutions.

  • Reporting to the Managing Director, I was responsible for a national portfolio of 50 sites and 20 million public visits annually, including 28 swimming pools, a portfolio of waterslides, and two outdoor lakes. Mobilised the awarding winning 5-site contract in Milton Keynes. Awarding winning pool manager securing RLSS Training Centre of the Year, UK Active Go Green Award, PWTAG Pool Mark award for water quality.

2015-2016 | National Lifeguarding Manager | 1Life Management Solutions.

  • Appointed shortly following the drowning fatality at Maldon in Essex as part of the improvement strategy to make the necessary changes to pool safety. Responsible for 28 swimming pools.

2014-2018| Archivist and Research Assistant | Joint: Oxford/Birkbeck/Warwick Universities.

  • Provided research and editorial assistance to 11 PhD candidates based across the following Universities: Warwick, Newcastle, Kings College London, Oxford, Birkbeck and Cardiff Metropolitan University.
  • Responsible for archiving the work of the late Professor Patrick McAuslan for the Bodleian Libraries in Oxford.

2009-2015 | Lifeguard, trainer, and safety advisor | Boston Borough Council.

  • I was responsible for developing the swimming pool and site safety at Geoff Moulder Leisure Complex and worked across the Council to support safeguarding, safety and training work.
