Statistics: Outdoor activity in Great Britain

The following data is taken from the ONS Great Britain Tourism and Day Visits Surveys between 2011 and 2019.
Trends in outdoor events
- Activity at the coast, marinas, and inland waters are all on the rise.
- The largest rise in outdoor activity has taken place in towns and cities.
- The coast has seen the second-largest increase in tourism.
- Remote mountains, woodlands, and grasslands have all seen a decline in visitor numbers.

Headline trends in outdoor activity expenditure by activity category
- The Great British public is gravitating toward organized sports and leisure activities and away from more sedate experiences.
- The largest single increase in expenditure was seen in adventure and water sports.
- Walking, running, and cycling remains popular and resilient in the face of competition amongst outdoor pursuits.
- Whilst visits to the beach have increased, spending has decreased.
- Local food and drink have seen one of the largest increases in spending.

Trends in outdoor expenditure by activity
- Sightseeing continues its strong climb in outdoor activity expenditure.
- Growth in running and jogging is outpacing cycling.
- Adventure sports are losing spending to water sports.
- Golf continues to experience strong growth in spending.
