Guidance: Fasting and Dieting

Jun 06, 2023

Homepage > Industry Guidance

RLSS UK provides guidance for lifeguards who are fasting during Ramadan. Fasting affects individuals differently. First-time fasters may find their ability to concentrate whilst providing constant poolside supervision is significantly reduced. Experienced fasters may find their concentration is not affected at all. The effects of fasting are also affected by the quantity of food you eat between sunset and sunrise and your hydration levels. If fasting affects your concentration as a lifeguard, you should inform your employer. Under Regulation 14 MHSWR 1999, you must notify your employer of any work situation that presents a serious and imminent danger.

Dieting or 'weight cutting' may have the same or similar effects. If you substantially restrict your calorific intake, you must notify your employer if it begins to affect your concentration while providing constant poolside supervision.
